About Contemplative Prayer

Contemplative Prayer is the opening of one’s spirit to the indwelling of God. It is the loving gaze of faith. Unlike Verbal Prayer, (when we speak to God) and Mental Prayer (when we think about God), Contemplative Prayer invites us to simply sit with God and give God space to pray in us.

“For God alone my soul waits in silence.”

- Psalm 62:1

“One thing I ask from the LORD, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple.”

-Psalm 27:4

"Those who delight in a multitude of words, even though they say admirable things, are empty within. If you love truth, be a lover of silence. Silence like the sunlight will illuminate you in God and will deliver you from the phantoms of ignorance. Silence will unite your soul to God."

-Isaac of Nineveh

"In contemplative prayer we seek to become the person we are called to be, not by thinking of God, but by being with God. Simply to be with God is to be drawn into being the person God calls us to be"

- John Main

“If you surrender yourself, and do not rush, but meditate on the Word of God, you will find prayer forming in your heart. It is a prayer inspired by the Holy Spirit, a prayer that God will be pleased to hear.”

-John R. Rice
