Barrett began vocational ministry in 1997 and has been a pastor on multiple church staffs since that time. He joined the Mt. Carmel church staff in July of 2011 as the Minister to Children, Youth, Young Adults and Families and became Pastor on January 11, 2015. His wife, Kerry, is a local teacher, and they have two daughters, Chloe and Lola, as well as a son, Reef. Barrett completed his M.Div. degree at Campbell Divinity School, and he also holds an MAT from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Prior to his post graduate degrees he completed a BA in Religious Studies from St. Andrews Presbyterian College. He loves: running with his wife, playing with his kids, lounging on the beach, swinging a golf club, and cheering for the Tar Heels.

Virginia has served several churches in Chapel Hill since moving here over 25 years ago, but being the Minister of Children at Mount Carmel at this time is the most fun she’s had in ministry. Virginia earned a Doctor of Ministry at Campbell University in 2017 and a Master of Divinity at Fuller Theological Seminary in 1998. Her husband, Ralph, is an engineer for the State of North Carolina in Raleigh and they are happy to have their daughter and son-in-law only ten minutes down the road. When she’s not at church, Virginia is probably walking around her neighborhood with friends and unicorns, stretching out on a Pilates mat, meeting a friend for coffee, reading a book in her hammock, or watching a Hallmark movie.
Jan’s passion is education. She graduated Cum Laude from Wake Forest University with a B.A in Elementary Education. Her enthusiasm for educating young children was fueled as she taught Sunday School, led Vacation Bible School, and formed a Wednesday Night Kids Club. The opportunity to direct a preschool was right up Jan’s alley. Preschool is about creating a love of learning and sharing God’s love with the children and their families.
Outside of preschool, Jan loves to spend time at Atlantic Beach and enjoys cooking and event planning. Jan has been married to her husband, Larry, for over 30 years. They have three grown daughters, Louisa, Ginnie and Sarah.
Emily is a senior at UNC Chapel Hill studying Psychology and Education. She is also a member of the Phi Beta Chi Christian sorority. Her goal is to become an elementary school teacher.
Karen has been working for Mount Carmel since 2005. Growing up in Chapel Hill she has fond memories of attending Mount Carmel as a child with her parents and sister. Karen lives in Efland with her husband, Mike, and two cats, Clyde and Hannah. She enjoys spending time with her two daughters, two granddaughters and grandson.
Prior to becoming Director of Music Ministries, Jane had been a member of the Mount Carmel choir for many years and directed it previously. She has great music skills and great heart for leading in worship through music. Her middle school bands were consistently ranked high (superior).
Jane is retired as Director of Instrumental Music at Phillips Middle School in Chapel Hill. She had worked with and inspired children for in that role for nearly 30 years. On many occasions, Jane has recruited those youth to perform in cantatas at Mt. Carmel. In addition, Jane is very experienced with adult, youth & children’s vocal groups, having been a pianist and Music Director at Mount Carmel several times in the past.
Jane received a B.A. cum laude in Music Education from NC Wesleyan College where she attended on a full scholarship, all while holding the position of Music Director at her home church.
Jane is married to Mason and they have two grown sons, Adam and Andrew.

Will is a graduate of Gardner-Webb University with a BA in Biblical Studies. After getting “caught in the Webb” so to speak, he is currently pursuing a Master’s of Divinity at the Gardner-Webb School of Divinity. His wife, Rebecca, is working on her Master’s in Mental Health Counseling at GWU as well (for which Will proves to be a great case study…). He enjoys trips to Aldi with his wife, playing the ole sports ball, and singing in the shower.
Minister of Students & Praise Band Leader
Crystal was raised in Columbia, NC, a small town near the coast, but she has been a Chapel Hill resident all of her adult life. She is married to Jonathan and they have a son named Braxton and a four legged boy named Perry; both their pride and joy. She has been a stay at home mom since Braxton was born which she claims is “the most rewarding job of her life.” Crystal loves the church and children and does an amazing job of keeping the Mt. Carmel nursery staffed and organized.
