Mount Carmel is blessed to have five ministers on staff to serve the church and two administrative staff who support church operations. Stop by the church office anytime to say hello!
Barrett began vocational ministry in 1997 and has been a pastor on multiple church staffs since that time. He joined the Mt. Carmel church staff in July of 2011 as the Minister to Children, Youth, Young Adults and Families and became Pastor on January 11, 2015. His wife, Kerry, is a local teacher, and they have two daughters, Chloe and Lola, as well as a son, Reef. Barrett completed his M.Div. degree at Campbell Divinity School, and he also holds an MAT from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Prior to his post graduate degrees he completed a BA in Religious Studies from St. Andrews Presbyterian College. He loves: running with his wife, playing with his kids, lounging on the beach, swinging a golf club, and cheering for the Tar Heels.
Minister of Children
Sharley is a graduate of Campbell University Divinity School (CUDS) with a M.A. in Faith and Leadership Formation. She is currently continuing her education at CUDS in pursuit of a M.Div. with a concentration in counseling. Her husband, John, is president of a nonprofit for real estate “agents for change” in the community. Together, they corral four children: Hannah, Hope, William, and Grayson. Their favorite things to do as a family include cooking, movie nights, dance parties, board games, and scooter races with their lively pup, Cooper.
Karen has been working for Mount Carmel since 2005. Growing up in Chapel Hill she has fond memories of attending Mount Carmel as a child with her parents and sister. Karen lives in Efland with her husband, Mike, and two cats, Clyde and Hannah. She enjoys spending time with her two daughters, two granddaughters, and grandson.
Minister of Music
Shannon served in churches in Hendersonville and Graham prior to filling the role of Minister of Music at MCBC. She was on staff at MCBC some years ago as youth and children’s music minister and was very excited to return! Shannon and her husband, David, a middle school teacher, live in Mebane with their youngest child, Caroline. Their older daughter, Chloe, is a student at UNC-Charlotte and son, Jonathan, is at McAfee School of Theology in Atlanta.
With degrees from Converse College and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary along with a master’s degree in English from University of New Orleans, Shannon has served as a music minister as well as minister to families over the last 22 years.
Shannon has a big love for hymns and enjoys exploring the stories and histories behind them. She would gladly sit and play piano for hours if given the opportunity, and being outdoors when the weather is warm is her favorite thing. Shannon’s love of food, especially NC classics like barbecue, liver mush, and deviled eggs, is always a major topic of conversation.
Kaylie grew up attending Mount Carmel Baptist Church and went to Vacation Bible School every summer while visiting her grandparents. She moved to North Carolina from Florida in 2014 to be closer to her family but eventually moved back and was involved in Mount Carmel’s Youth Group and enjoyed going to church on Wednesdays and Sundays. Kaylie has her Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education and has six years of experience working with children ranging from infants to school aged children. Currently, Kaylie works as a 12 to 18 month old teacher at a daycare. In her free time, she enjoys being with family and friends, taking her dog Mocha for walks, and coloring.
Minister of Preschool Children
Virginia has served several churches in Chapel Hill since moving here over 25 years ago, but being the Minister of Preschool Children at Mount Carmel at this time is the most fun she’s had in ministry. Virginia earned a Doctor of Ministry at Campbell University in 2017 and a Master of Divinity at Fuller Theological Seminary in 1998. Her husband, Ralph, is an engineer for the State of North Carolina in Raleigh and they are happy to have their daughter and son-in-law only ten minutes down the road. When she’s not at church, Virginia is probably walking around her neighborhood with friends and unicorns, stretching out on a Pilates mat, meeting a friend for coffee, reading a book in her hammock, or watching a Hallmark movie.
Minister of Students & Praise Band Leader
Will is a graduate of Gardner-Webb University where he majored in Biblical Studies. He has a passion for the local church, especially in the areas of youth and contemporary worship where he serves as a minister. He loves to play tennis, sing songs, play instruments, and get lost in the Greek of the New Testament. He, his wife Rebecca, and his sister Charlotte love being part of the wonderful church family of Mount Carmel.
Kimberly is originally from a small southern New Jersey town outside Philadelphia. She has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Delaware in Art Conservation and has worked in museums and libraries in the past. She moved to North Carolina in 2014 and has two sons, a precious cat, and two spoiled guinea pigs. Kimberly enjoys history, art, learning languages, feeding stray cats, watching horror movies, organizing, and chocolate.
Dawn coordinates the church's weekly Wednesday Night Suppers. She has been involved in Mount Carmel's Shepherd's Table program and semi-annual BBQs for years, and is the perfect person to run the kitchen!
